Our brains are wired to conserve energy? That’s right; our brains are programmed to both create blanks and to fill in the blanks. Our brains are designed to remember the beginning and the end of a story or an event. And our brains are designed to fill in the blanks so it doesn’t have to work so hard. And they is why poetry is such a powerful vehicle for hearing thoughts we might not normally hear. Poetry creates word patterns that are out of our normal processing model. We have to slow down, allowing our brains to absorb the words.
